The Hummingbird is an extraordinary creature whose very existence is a source of fascination and inspiration. Beautiful, brave, even fierce, and above all, persistent in its search for the sweet nectar found deep within each flower.
In Mexico, where many of the more than 300 species of hummingbirds overwinter, it has been recognized since pre-Columbian times as a spiritual messenger; a symbol of vitality, wit, and divine possibility.
Its feathers adorned Aztec shields, providing valor and protection to warriors. The hummingbird would carry the souls of fallen warriors, which could explain why in their mythical encounters with the Coyote, despite the differences in size and "military equipment," the Hummingbird emerges victorious.

Hummingbird Totem
Let us take a moment to reflect on this marvel. The hummingbird has the largest heart-body ratio of any animal in the animal kingdom. Its little heart beats up to 1200 times per minute. It has the highest brain-body weight ratio among all birds, despite being the smallest among them. Its wings, which flap 50-200 times per second, are configured to move in a figure-eight pattern, allowing it to fly forward, backward, upward, downward, sideways, and even upside down. In addition, it can hover in mid-air.
In SPANDA, we choose the hummingbird as a special power animal for all students and seekers. The nectar is, of course, the food of the spirit; the type of knowledge that is rarely found on the surface but resides deep within many sources.
We appreciate the example of vitality and movement that the hummingbird represents, as well as its ability to be still in the present moment. We admire its immense variety, its fearless courage, and how, in beautiful iridescent flashes, it grants us a glimpse of the Divine.
The hummingbird has a keen sense of vision that extends into the ultraviolet spectrum. Since it needs to consume twice its body weight in food every day, it is constantly in search of nectar, becoming familiar with the location of each flower in its territory and the interval required for each flower to replenish its nectar levels between visits.
For its inspiration to strive, but with a cheerful tune, to dance, fly, and love life.
The invitation is to open our hearts and our eyes so that, beyond the ups and downs, we can feel and see the blessings, taste the sweetness, and enjoy the surprises and miracles, one of which is the hummingbird itself. And another, which is you!
May the grace, strength, beauty, and magic of the hummingbird guide our journey!
